Prayers for Women who have Made Mistakes (Based on the Story of Eve)

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

Eve was the very first woman created on earth, and the first woman to defy God’s command to do her own thing. There have also been times when we have also been connived by the enemy and have fallen for his deceitful schemes. But praise God for his unending love and forgiveness! Although we make mistakes and stray from God’s plan and purpose for our lives, through Christ, God’s grace covers our sins when we call out to him.

Prayer: Lord, I pray for women who have made mistakes and have strayed from your path. Just as Eve disobeyed you in Genesis chapter 3, you already had a plan to provide salvation and forgiveness for the sins of humanity through Jesus Christ. Like the prodigal son, you welcome us back into your loving arms when we call out to you. I pray for women everywhere to know how deeply loved they are by you, and may they follow you with their whole hearts. Amen.

Prayers for Women who are Waiting on God (The Story of Sarah)

Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord. Psalm 27:14

Sarah, the wife of Abraham, was quite surprised when God told Abraham that she would have a son in her old age. She was so surprised that she laughed in disbelief, thinking, “After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?” (Genesis 18:12)

But God’s promise to them was fulfilled, even though their son Isaac was born 25 years after God first proclaimed the promise to Abraham (source).

What do we do when we are waiting on God like Abraham and Sarah? We wait patiently, trusting that God will fulfill his promises.

Prayer: Lord, I pray for women who are waiting on you to answer their prayers. Help them to stand steadfast and strong as they trust in you. Help them to know that you are with them and that you will never leave or forsake them. Though Sarah was doubtful that you would fulfill your promise to her, she laughed with joy when she held her son Isaac in her arms (Genesis 21:6). Help us to wait patiently for your purposes and promises to be fulfilled in our lives. Amen.

Prayers for Women who Feel Alone and Abandoned (Hagar)

Do not hide your face from me, do not turn your servant away in anger; you have been my helper. Do not reject me or forsake me, God my Savior. Psalm 27:9

While Abraham and Sarah were waiting on God to bring them a son, Sarah suggested that Abraham try to establish a family through his servant Hagar (Genesis 16:1-2). This did not go well, and Hagar fled from her master’s home with her son into the wilderness (Genesis 16:1-6).

We can all identify with Hagar, as there are times when we feel neglected, abandoned, and alone in our difficult circumstances. In those moments, God gently reminds us that he sees us, and that he will help us.

Prayer: Lord, today I say a prayer for women who feel rejected, abandoned, and alone. Help them to know that you will not reject them or forsake them. Hide them under the shadow of your wings, and give them strength and comfort in the midst of their difficult circumstances. Let them know that you will sustain them and be their shield of protection forever. Amen.

Prayers for Women to Trust in the Lord (Hannah)

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6

Hannah is a woman in the Old Testament with a beautiful story of tenacious faith. In the midst of infertility and ridicule from her rival Peninnah, she persisted in prayer (1 Samuel 1:6-7). During moments of trial and despair, she continued to trust in the Lord, waiting patiently for him to come to her aid.

Whatever difficult circumstance you are going through, may you persist in prayer as you trust in the Lord each day!

Prayer: Lord, I pray for women everywhere to trust you with a heart like Hannah. Help them to not give up in the midst of their difficult circumstances, even when things seem bleak and hopeless. Teach them to call upon you with strength and perseverance, knowing and trusting that you hear their every prayer. Amen.

Prayers for Women to Fight their Battles (Deborah)

“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” Exodus 14:14

I love the story of Deborah. She was a prophetess and judge, and helped members of the Israelite community resolve disputes (Judges 4:4). She sent for Barak and told him that the Lord commanded him to lead the Israelite army to defeat their enemies (Judges 4:6-7). But Barak was unwilling to carry out God’s instructions without Deborah going with him. She agreed, but said that the enemy would be delivered into the hands of a woman (Judges 4:9).

No matter what battles you may be facing in your life, know that God will go before you, and that he is with you in the midst of every storm.

Prayer: Lord, thank you that we don’t have to fight our battles alone. Whatever we are going through, help us to remember that you are with us, and that you are fighting our battles for us. We praise you because the victory is already ours through Christ Jesus. Like Deborah, give us the strength and courage to fight against the enemy with power and confidence. Amen.

Prayers for Women to Have Unshakable Faith (Rahab)

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. Hebrews 11:1

Rahab was a woman who showed great faith in God, even though she was a prostitute and was not part of the community of Israel. When the two Israelite spies were scoping out the city of Jericho, they stayed with Rahab. When the king of Jericho discovered that the spies were in his city, he sent messengers to Rahab’s house and commanded that she bring the spies before him (Joshua 2:2-7).

Rahab hid the spies on her roof and redirected the king’s messengers elsewhere by saying that the spies had already left. Rahab had faith in God after she heard about how God had rescued the Israelites from Egypt (Joshua 2:10). As a result of Rahab’s faith, her entire family was saved from the destruction of Jericho (Joshua 2:12-13).

We never know how our faith in God will impact the lives of others around us. May we pray for unshakable faith in the midst of difficult circumstances, and may our faith bring others to salvation!

Prayer: Lord, I pray for women everywhere to have solid, unshakable faith in you. Give us confidence in your Word as we trust in you each day. Though we do not see how the path before us will unfold, help us to follow your direction and put our hope in you. May we put our faith in you like Rahab did, believing in your power and truth. Amen.

Prayers or Women who are Grieving (Naomi)

But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted; you consider their grief and take it in hand. The victims commit themselves to you; you are the helper of the fatherless. Psalm 10:14

Naomi was a woman of faith who suffered greatly. Her husband and two sons passed away while she was living in a foreign land, and when she came back to her hometown of Bethlehem, she told everyone to call her Mara, which means bitter. Here’s what she said to the people in town when she returned to Bethlehem,

“Don’t call me Naomi,” she told them. “Call me Mara, because the Almighty has made my life very bitter. I went away full, but the Lord has brought me back empty. Why call me Naomi? The Lord has afflicted me; the Almighty has brought misfortune upon me.” Ruth 1:20-21

There are times when we all feel abandoned and neglected by God. The pain of our grief is sometimes so heavy that we feel as though we can’t bear it any longer. In those moments, may we keep our eyes on the One who will wipe every tear from our eyes, and can turn our sorrow into dancing (Psalm 30:11).

Prayer: Lord, I lift up prayers for women who are grieving right now. Please be their comfort and strength. Let them know that you are right beside them, and that you see every tear they shed. Just like Naomi, they have experienced great pain and loss, and sometimes feel like you have forsaken them.

Reassure them of your unending love, and may they experience your joy in the midst of their sorrow. Wrap your loving arms around them, and remind them that you will never let them go. Amen.

Prayers for Women to Follow God Wholeheartedly (Ruth)

But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Ruth 1:16

Even though Naomi experienced terrible loss in her life, the Lord granted her a wonderful daughter-in-law named Ruth, who was determined to stay with Naomi and would not leave her side. It certainly is a blessing when we receive the love and support of our family and friends during times of difficulty.

Not only did Ruth follow Naomi back to her home country, but she wanted to follow Naomi’s God.

Ruth was willing to leave her own home, family, and country to go with Naomi–and she was determined to follow the God of Israel, who greatly blessed her. May we have the same courage and determination to follow the Lord wholeheartedly, no matter what.

Prayer: Lord, may we follow you with all our hearts. Direct our paths and lead us in the way we should go. Just as Ruth was willing to go with Naomi to a foreign land, help us to be willing to follow you wherever you lead us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayers for Women to have Great Courage (Esther)

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6

We are all greatly inspired by the powerful story of Esther, who was willing to risk her life in order to save her people from the wicked plan of Haman (Esther 3:8-9). We know that she was appointed to become queen for such a time as this (Esther 4:14).

We may never experience this kind of life or death situation in our own lives, but we can pray that the Lord gives us courage and bravery to face our own challenges in life with grace and wisdom.

Prayer: Lord, I pray that Christian women everywhere will have the courage and strength to face life’s difficult circumstances. May we rely on your might and power each day. When the storms of life rage around us, surround us with your shield of favor and protection. Help us to withstand life’s trials and come out victorious through you. We thank you that nothing is impossible with you. Amen.

Prayers for Women to Spend Time with Jesus (Mary of Bethany)

One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple. Psalm 27:4

I am always encouraged when I read the story of Mary of Bethany. She was a powerful woman of faith who loved Jesus with all her heart. The story we are perhaps most familiar with is the story of when she sat at the feet of Jesus (Luke 10:38-42). Her sister Martha was busy with all the preparations in the home, and she became frustrated with her sister Mary. Jesus, however, gently guided Martha to what was most important.

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”Luke 10:41-42

In the midst of the busyness of life, Jesus also gently reminds us of what is most important–spending time with him.

Prayer: Lord, help us to intentionally spend time with you in prayer each day. Just as Mary of Bethany longed to sit at your feet and learn from you, help us to spend time in your Word to gain nourishment and strength for our souls.Thank you that spending time in your presence brings joy, peace and hope in you. Amen.

Prayers for Women to Serve the Lord (Martha)

Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing. Psalm 100:2 (KJV)

Even though Martha, the sister of Mary, was distracted by the preparations that needed to be done in her home when Jesus came to visit, we do see that Martha also loved the Lord, and wanted to serve him. As we seek to serve the Lord each day in our homes and in our communities, may we serve the Lord with gladness and thanksgiving.

Prayer: Lord, help us to joyfully serve you and advance your Kingdom with power. Thank you for the honor and privilege we have to serve you each day with our gifts, talents, time and abilities. Help us to serve you wholeheartedly. Amen.

Prayers for Women to Trust God with their Motherhood (Mary the Mother of Jesus)

The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him. Psalm 28:7

Can you imagine being the mother of Jesus, seeing your beloved son die on a cross? That must have been extremely difficult for Mary. When the angel Gabriel came to Mary to announce the birth of Jesus, he told her that she would give birth to the Savior of the world (Luke 1:31-33).

When Jesus was hanging on the cross, it looked like all hope was lost. But Mary had to trust the Lord in the midst of what seemed like an impossible situation–and three days later, Jesus rose with all power in his hands!

There are times when we also have to trust the Lord with our children. We don’t see the whole picture, but God does. When circumstances seem hopeless and impossible, may we rely on the power and strength of our great God.

Prayer: Lord, help us to trust you with our motherhood each day. Whether we are new mothers, or mothers with adult children, help us to surrender our children to you. We place them in your hands and ask that you will direct their paths and lead their lives. Help them to rely and depend on you for their source of strength, and help us to model before them a life of love, faith and grace. Amen.

Prayers for Women to Impact their Families (Lydia)

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16

Lydia was a woman of faith who gathered with other women to pray. The apostle Paul saw them together, and began sharing the Gospel with them. Lydia was so moved by Paul’s message that she invited him and his companions to stay with them at her house, and her entire family put their faith in Jesus (Acts 16:13-15).

I love Lydia’s story because it shows how one woman’s faith powerfully impacted her entire family. May we live such amazing lives of faith that our families are moved and inspired to follow Christ as well!

Prayer: Dear Lord, I pray for women to have a powerful impact on their families. As they raise their children, establish within them a solid spiritual foundation that will remain in their families for generations to come. Help them to also support their families emotionally and physically. Just as Lydia impacted her family with the message of the Gospel, help us to leave a lasting legacy of faith within our families.

In Jesus’ name, amen.
