15 Powerful Prayers for Mothers (with Free Printables)

There are many prayers for mothers in the Bible that we can use to bless and encourage our mothers. Whether you are looking for prayers for your own mother or want to express your appreciation for close friends and family members, Scripture is filled with powerful truths that will uplift mothers in many different seasons of life.

What does God say about Mothers?

God has much to say about mothers. He greatly values mothers and their unique contribution to the world. Jesus certainly would not have been born without a mother! One of the most well-known Scriptures related to parenthood is found in Exodus 20:12, which is also one of the Ten Commandments:

“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.”

The word honor in Hebrew means to make weighty, or to be honorable (source).

How do you honor your mother? Do you view her as a weight or burden, or as someone with rich value, glorious dignity, and honorable worth? How can we bless and honor our mothers as God commanded in Exodus? One of the best ways we can honor our mothers is by praying for them.

15 Powerful Prayers for Mothers

We are deeply encouraged when we know that others are praying for us. We can send a note in the mail or a text message expressing our love and appreciation. We can also send our mothers a heartfelt prayer. Here are 15 prayers for mothers that we can use to encourage them. At the end of this post you can download a free printable with these prayers that can be used as a Mother’s Day gift, or a special gesture of love any time of the year!

1. A Prayer of Blessing for my Mother

I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread. They are always generous and lend freely; their children will be a blessing.

Psalm 37:25-27

Praying a prayer of blessing over our mothers is a powerful way to express love for them. The word blessing in Hebrew is bᵊrāḵâ which means prosperity, blessing, praise of God, a gift, or a treaty of peace (source). Our mothers are truly a blessing and gift from God. When we pray a blessing over our mothers, we pray for the peace of God to reign in their hearts and in their homes.

Prayer: Lord, today I pray a prayer of blessing for my mother. Shower her with your blessings each day as she trusts in you. Multiply her blessings, and please provide for her every need. I pray that my family and I will continue to bless her with our love and support. Amen.

2. A Prayer of Thanksgiving for my Mother

Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.

Colossians 4:2

How often do we forget to express gratitude to those in our family? One of the prayers for mothers that we can pray any time of the year is a prayer of thanksgiving. Not only can we offer thanks to God for the influence of our mothers, but we can make sure to thank them by making a phone call or writing a special note expressing our gratitude for them. Many people like to use the verse from Philippians 1:3, I thank my God every time I remember you.

Prayer: Lord, I thank you for my mother. Thank you for placing her in my life, and for the blessing she is to me and my family. Thank you for the godly wisdom that she has instilled in me. Words cannot express the gratefulness I have in my heart for her beauty and spiritual influence in my life. Please continue to bless her and surround her with your grace and favor. Amen.

3. A Prayer for Expectant Mothers

“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.”

Luke 1:38

When it comes to mothers mentioned in the Bible, no one can deny the remarkable character of Mary, the mother of Jesus. When she received news from the angel Gabriel that she would become the mother to the Savior of the world, she replied with great faith:

“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.”

Though no other woman on earth carried the weight of bearing the Son of God as Mary did, mothers certainly understand the high calling and responsibility of motherhood. No matter what calling God has place on our lives, may we all respond with the same level of trust and faith that Mary displayed.

Prayer: Lord, I pray for expectant mothers all over the world. I ask that you will keep their children safe in their wombs as they patiently await their arrival. Thank you for the joy that they will experience as they prepare for their children’s birth. Calm their minds, and strengthen their bodies as they seek to raise their children in your wisdom and truth. Amen.

4. A Prayer for New Mothers

May your father and mother rejoice; may she who gave you birth be joyful!

Proverbs 23:25

What a joy and blessing it is to be a new mother! After nine months of waiting in eager anticipation, our little ones finally arrive. We are filled with joy, excitement, and nervousness at the beautiful and daunting task of raising a child. If you know a new mother in your church or family, offer to help out by sending her a meal, and pray for her as she embarks on her new journey of motherhood.

Prayer: Lord, bless all new mothers everywhere. You have given them the blessing of a new life to care for. Please equip them with the grace and wisdom they need to be the best mothers they can be. Surround them with seasoned and experienced mothers who can help them grow in their walk with you, and to grow as new mothers. Give them the strength and encouragement they need each day. Amen.

5. A Prayer for Mothers who are Grieving

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

Psalm 147:3

Many of us have experienced the deep pain of loss in our lives. Whether it is loss through miscarriage, losing a family member due to tragedy or illness, the pain of losing a loved one is absolutely devastating. Mother’s Day, birthdays, and other holidays are often difficult reminders of those who are no longer with us on this side of eternity. If you know a mother who is going through a heart wrenching loss, extend love and compassion towards her in your prayers today.

Prayer: Lord, I pray for mothers who are grieving. Whether they are mourning the loss of a friend, family member, or a precious child, comfort them with the strength and comfort that can only come from you. Be ever-present with them during this time of difficulty, and remind them of your never-ending love for them each day. Amen.

6. A Prayer for Mothers to Grow in Faith

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God…

Ephesians 2:8

Motherhood has a unique way of stretching our faith. We definitely find ourselves more dependent on God for wisdom and guidance when raising our children. Parenting can sometimes feel like you are playing the “trust game”. You let go, lean back, and trust that God will catch you before you fall! Seek the Lord for wisdom and grace along your journey of motherhood, and ask God to strengthen the faith of other mothers each day!

Prayer: Lord, strengthen the faith of all mothers through the power of your word. Help them to put their hope and trust in you, and to call upon your name in prayer each day. Help them to grow in their faith as they spend time studying your word. Illuminate the truth of your scriptures as they read the Bible and gain wisdom and knowledge. Amen.

7. A Prayer for Mothers of Adult Children

They are always generous and lend freely; their children will be a blessing.

Psalm 37:26

No matter how old our children become, we will never stop loving them or cease to be their mothers. Due to this fact, navigating motherhood with adult children has its own set of unique blessings and challenges. If you are a mother to adult children, pray that our Lord will help you learn how to interact with your adult children, and that He will give you wisdom on how to love them with grace and honor.

Prayer: Lord, I pray for mothers of adult children. Although their children are grown up, they will never stop loving their children. Help them to be supportive of their adult children as they interact and fellowship with one another. May their relationships deepen, and give them wisdom to know how to best love and support their children in their adult years. Amen.

8. A Prayer for Mothers of Prodigal Children

But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

Luke 15:20

Many of us can relate to the story of the prodigal son as we think of our own spiritual journeys. Haven’t we all at some point in our lives strayed from our Heavenly Father as the prodigal son did? At times we have desired to go our own way–but praise God that he did not not leave us in our sinful state of rebellion! Like the father in the story of the prodigal son, God waits patiently for us to return to his loving arms.

If you or another mother you know is experiencing the painful season of a prodigal child who has walked away from God, pray that the Lord will give them comfort, rest, and peace as they eagerly await for their children to return. With God, all things are possible! (Matthew 19:26)

Prayer: Lord, I pray for mothers who are dealing with the pain of a prodigal child. Embrace them in your arms of tender care, and may they receive your comfort and strength. Help them to not give up on their children, but to patiently wait for them to return home. Remind them that you have not given up on them, and that you love their children with an everlasting love. May she lean upon you each day as she loves her children with your unconditional love. Amen.

9. A Prayer for Adoptive Mothers

The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”

Romans 8:15

When we think of the vast love of God, we are reminded of the beautiful example we have of the perfect adoptive parent. There are many Scriptures that speak of how we as believers are adopted into the family of God. One of my favorite Scriptures on adoption is found in Romans 8:15. Rather than feeling the alienation of abandonment and rejection, through Christ we are adopted into God’s family, and are lavished with his love and acceptance.

Adoptive families can serve as a powerful reminder of the spiritual blessing we have through Christ! Pray for adoptive mothers to continue to rely on God’s strength to help them love their children with grace and power.

Prayer: Lord, I pray for adoptive mothers and/or foster mothers. Thank you for how they faithfully serve you and their children. Thank you that you are the ultimate example of adopting us into your loving family. Thank you for choosing us as your children. I pray that adoptive mothers will hold firmly to the promises in your word, and will continue to look to you for help, hope, and strength as they raise the wonderful children in their care. In Jesus name, Amen.

10. Prayers for Mothers: A Prayer of Protection

But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you.

Psalm 5:11

Praying prayers of protection are great ways to pray for our mothers. Psalm 91 is a popular psalm many people use to pray for protection and covering over their loved ones. I also love Psalm 5:12, which describes the beautiful imagery of God’s protection surrounding his people like a shield. As you pray for your mother or for mothers everywhere, ask the Lord to sustain and protect them with his grace, mercy, and love.

Prayer: Lord, I pray for your loving protection to guard all mothers. Guard them and keep them in all their ways. Watch over their going out and they’re coming in. Give them the physical strength and stamina they need to accomplish what you have purposed for them to do as mothers. Protect them from the schemes of Satan, and may your favor and protection surround them as with a shield (Psalm 5:12). Amen.

11. A Prayer for Single Mothers

A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling.

Psalm 68:5

When I think of single mothers in the Bible, I am reminded of the widow in Zarephath in 1 Kings 17:7-16. Her story is one of amazing faith and trust in the Lord during dire situations. There was a famine in the land, and rain would not come for the next few years. The widow was preparing to make her final meal before she and her son would die of starvation (1 Kings 17:12). But the prophet Elijah encouraged the widow to make a loaf of bread for him, declaring to her that ‘…the jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.’ (1 Kings 17:14)

Her trust and obedience not only saved her and her son, but provided an abundance of God’s blessing over her home. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the Lord spoken by Elijah. (1 Kings 17:15)

If you know of any single mothers in your family, church, or community, look for ways you can extend assistance to her. Also, pray a special prayer of provision and strength for them, that they may see the hand of God work powerfully in their lives!

A Prayer for Mothers: Lord, I pray for single mothers everywhere. Bless them with the power, through your Holy Spirit, to raise their children with grace, wisdom, and truth. During those moments of difficulty and despair, remind them of the promises from your word to strengthen and encourage their souls. Remind them that you are there for them, and will guide them each day. May they take their burdens to the cross, and rely upon you for their source of help during times of need. In Jesus name, Amen.

12. A Prayer for Women Struggling with Infertility

So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, “Because I asked the Lord for him.”

1 Samuel 1:20

There are many examples of women in Scripture who deeply desired to bear children, but encountered the pain and devastation of infertility. One such woman was Hannah. Through much weeping and mourning, Hannah continually cried out to the Lord. She earnestly prayed to God for a son, and he heard her prayer and gave her a son (1 Samuel 1:10-11, 19). In humble gratitude and appreciation, Hannah dedicated her son Samuel back to the Lord, and Samuel served God in the temple, and became one of the greatest prophets in the Old Testament (1 Samuel 1:22, 2:21, 3:10)

Although we recognize God’s sovereignty and control over our lives, we often do not know or understand why He allows certain things to happen. We certainly can not comprehend how God’s plan will unfold in our lives. If you know of a woman who is experiencing infertility, pray that she will find comfort and rest in the sovereign plan of her Heavenly Father.

Prayer: Lord, I pray for women who desire to become mothers, but are struggling with infertility. Hold them close in your arms, and give them the comfort and strength they need each day. Let them know that you have not forgotten them, and that you know the desires of their hearts. Restore their mind, body, soul, and spirit. Remind them of your goodness and love for them. Amen.

13. A Prayer for Working Mothers

She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks.

Proverbs 31:16-17

It seems that no woman in the Bible worked harder than the Proverbs 31 woman. Though the Proverbs 31 woman outlines the characteristics of a godly wife, we can learn much from her example as a mother. She worked diligently to provide for her family, and showed initiative, expertise, and business savvy. We all know working mothers in our communities who work around the clock to ensure that their families are cared for. Pray that the Lord will continue to sustain them as they complete their daily tasks and provide for their families.

Prayers for Mothers: Lord, I pray for working moms, that you will give them the strength to keep going each day. During moments of fatigue and stress, calm their hearts and minds through your Word. Help them to release all cares, worries, and concerns to you, and may you guide their hearts with your peace that surpasses all understanding. Surround them with a godly support system that will encourage them and remind them of your great love for them and their children. Amen.

14. A Prayer for Stay at Home Mothers

She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.

Proverbs 31:26-27

Not only was the Proverbs 31 woman a hard worker outside of the home, but she diligently worked within her home. Many mothers choose to stay home to raise their children, or may also choose to work from home. Staying home full time to raise young children and manage the household is also a full-time job! If you know any stay-at-home moms in your family, church, or community, pray that the Lord will strengthen them each day to walk in the unique calling that they have chosen as mothers.

Prayer: Lord, I pray for stay-at-home moms. Strengthen them each day as they seek to serve you in their homes. Bless them as they care for their families with diligence and delight. May they walk in your wisdom and grace as they perform their tasks for your glory. Remind them of your love and faithfulness, and may they experience your joy and peace each day. Amen.

15. A Mother’s Day Prayer

Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.” Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

Proverbs 31:28-31

If you desire to pray a special Mother’s Day prayer over your mother, you can use this prayer as a special blessing to her and mothers everywhere!

Prayer: Lord, I pray for my mother today on this special day of honor towards her. Thank you for her life, and for the blessing she has been in my life. Bless her and the family she loves so much! Thank you for the wonderful example of love and service she has displayed in her life. Today, I rise and call her blessed. May you continue to bless her and fill her heart with joy and love. Thank you for the impact she has had in my life and in my family. Today, may she experience the rich blessings of your goodness and faithfulness to her. In Jesus name, Amen.
