When many of us start out as young budding wives, we have such high hopes for our marriages. No one sets out on their wedding day vowing to have miserable, bitter marriages filled with suffering and sorrow. We walk down the aisle, bright-eyed and beaming, ready to conquer the world with our knight in shining armor. Then life happens.

Unexpected trials hit. The job lay-offs, struggles of infertility, the heavy demands of parenting–and our “happily-ever-afters” become the heart-wrenching disappointment of deferred dreams and unmet expectations. Like ships in the night, we drift apart. Our vows of “till death do us part” become a distant memory…

It is absolutely imperative that we pray for our husbands and our marriages in the midst of life’s difficulties. The enemy of our souls gleefully slithers from the tree–with a subtle smile of victory. The same lie that worked for Eve has worked with us. It’s the lie that makes us question the goodness and sovereignty of our mighty God–

“Did God really say?”

Ladies, the enemy is the same sly serpent that went after the first marriage in human history.

He aims to steal, kill and destroy our marriages, but Jesus is GREATER–and came to flood our marriages with his abundance. Instead of succumbing to the same lies that Eve bought, we must fight for our marriages with the truth of God’s Word.

This is why it is so important that we pray for our husbands.

The Power of Praying for your Husband

Our prayers are not mere words. They have the life-giving power to perpetuate an inheritance of spiritual blessings for generations to come.

Many years ago, a godly spiritual mentor first introduced me to the book The Power of a Praying Wife, and it is a resource that I continually refer back to and recommend to other wives. In this book I learned how to use the Word of God to actively pray powerful prayers for my husband in the most prominent areas of his life–the areas where Satan will test him the most.

Let’s take a look at the Scriptures that you can use to pray for your husband, and let’s pray!

1. Prayer for my Husband: His Integrity

 But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.

1 Timothy 6:11

Lord, I pray for my husband, and I believe that through your Word that he is a man of integrity who pursues righteousness, godliness, faith and love (1 Timothy 6:11). He is a man of wisdom and holds to the truth of your Word as precious jewels.

2. Prayer for my Husband: Wisdom in Finances

And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19 

Lord, I pray that you will give my husband wisdom in our finances. Help him to seek you as he looks to you for direction and guidance regarding our finances. Help him to work diligently with his hands, and to give to those in need. Amen.

3. Prayer for my Husband: His Affection

So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Philippians 2:1-2

Lord, I pray that my husband will exude your affection and loving kindness towards me, my family, and those in our community. Give him a sense of love and compassion for others that can only come from you. I pray that he will be kind with his words, and thoughtful in his responses to others. I pray that he will grow each day in your grace and love, and extend that grace to others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

4. Prayer for my Husband: His Sexuality

Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

1 Corinthians 6:18-20

Lord, I pray that you will guard my husband’s heart and mind and give him the strength to flee sexual immorality. Help him to honor you with his body, and to keep his mind pure and focused on you. Help him to surround himself with godly men who can hold him accountable, and help him to call out to you for strength and guidance. Amen.

5. Prayer for my Husband: His Temptations

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

1 Corinthians 10:13

Lord, I pray that you will help my husband stand strong against temptation. Protect his mind from the influences of this world, and help him stand strong against temptation. You say in your Word that we will not be tempted beyond what we can bear, but that you will provide a way out so that we can endure (1 Corinthians 10:13). Help him to remember that you are with him and will give him the strength he needs to resist temptation that comes his way. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

6. Prayer for my Husband: His Mind 

But whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.

Psalm 1:2

Lord, I pray that you will guard my husband’s heart and mind. Through your Holy Spirit, allow his mind to be filled with your strength and peace. Help his mind to be at rest, and may he meditate on your word day and night (Psalm 1:2).

7. A Prayer for my Husband: His Fears

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Joshua 1:9

Lord, I pray for my husband’s fears and anxieties. When fears plague his heart and mind, remind him that he can be strong and courageous through you (Joshua 1:9). May your perfect love cast out all fear, so that he can make good decisions that will bless our family. Thank you Lord for hearing my prayer today. Amen.

8. Prayer for My Husband: His Purpose

With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may bring to fruition your every desire for goodness and your every deed prompted by faith.

2 Thessalonians 1:11

Lord, I pray for my husband’s purpose. Help him to first and foremost find his purpose and identity in you. Help him to realize what his skills and gifts are, and help him to grow in confidence as a man with passion and purpose. Help him to remember that his purpose is found in you. Each day, allow him to grow into the man of God you are calling him to be. Amen.

9. Prayer for my Husband: His Choices

Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance…

Proverbs 1:5

Lord, I pray for my husband’s choices. Help him to seek your face for direction in the decisions he needs to make for our family. I ask that you will aid him in taking action on the choices that you want him to make, and may you be honored and glorified in his life. Amen.

10. Prayer for my Husband: His Health 

He sent out his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave. Psalm 107:20

Lord, I pray for my husband’s health. Please sustain his body and give him optimal physical health and mental strength. Help him to make the right healthy choices to help his body to be healthy and strong. Please protect him from harm and danger, and continue to strengthen him each day. Amen.

11. Prayer for my Husband: His Protection

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

Psalm 91:1

Lord, I ask that you will protect my husband and keep him safe in your arms of refuge. I pray that he will dwell in your shelter and rest in your mighty shadow of protection and strength (Psalm 91:1) Surround him with your favor and protection as with a shield, and guard him in all his ways. Amen.

12. Prayer for my Husband: His Reputation

Hide me from the conspiracy of the wicked, from the plots of evildoers. They sharpen their tongues like swords and aim cruel words like deadly arrows. 

Psalm 64:2-3

Lord, help my husband to find favor with you and with those around him. May he be a man of integrity who does what is right in your eyes. I pray that he becomes a man of compassion and grace, who desires to help those in his community. I pray that his reputation will remain untarnished as he seeks to honor you with his life each day. Amen.

13. A Prayer for my Husband’s Priorities 

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Matthew 6:33

Lord, I pray for my husband’s priorities. Help him to prioritize you first and foremost, and secondly, his family above all priorities. Help his priorities to align with your Word. I trust and believe that if he seeks first your kingdom and righteousness, all other things will fall into place (Matthew 6:33). Amen. 

14. Prayer for my Husband: His Attitude 

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus…

Philippians 2:5

Lord, I pray for my husband’s attitude. May he have the same attitude as that of Jesus, who took the very nature of a servant and gave himself up for others (Philippians 2:5). Renew within him a heart and spirit that seeks to honor you. Amen.

15. A Prayer for my Husband’s Leadership

 Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way…

1 Peter 3:7a

Through your Spirit, may he dwell with me according to the wisdom and knowledge of God (1 Peter 3:7, Ephesians 5:25). In Jesus name, I trust and believe that he will be the godly father you have called him to be.

16. A Prayer for my Husband’s Accountability 

Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed.

Proverbs 15:22

Lord, I pray for my husband’s accountability. Please place godly men in his life who will hold him accountable, encourage him, and challenge him to be the man of God you are calling him to be. Give these men the strength to spur him on toward love and good deeds (Hebrews 10:24). Amen.

17. Prayer for my Husband: His Fatherhood

Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Ephesians 6:4

Lord, I pray for my husband’s fatherhood. I pray that he will not exasperate our children, but will lovingly train and instruct them in the admonition of God (Ephesians 6:4). Grant him the grace and patience to train our children up in the way they should go, so that when they are older, they will not depart from your truth (Proverbs 22:6). Help him to look to you as his Heavenly Father, that he may gain wisdom and guidance to become a godly father. Amen.

18. Prayer for my Husband: His Trials

In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.

1 Peter 1:6-7 

Lord, help my husband find strength and comfort in the midst of his trials. During those difficult moments, remind him that you are with him always. Strengthen his character and give him joy in the midst of his trials. Amen.

19. A Prayer for Unity in our Marriage 

Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.

Hebrews 13:4 

Lord, I pray for unity in our marriage. Bind our hearts together, and may we be one as you intend for us to be. Help me to honor and respect my husband as the servant-leader that you have called him to be, and teach him to love me sacrificially as Christ loves the church (Ephesians 5:25). Help us to have healthy communication and to speak words that will build us up and not tear one another down. Thank you Lord, that we can achieve unity and oneness through you. This is all for your glory, that our lives will be a testimony of your reckless love for humanity–the ultimate picture of how you gave yourself up for the Church, that we may be presented as your spotless bride and dwell in eternal union with you.

20. Prayer for my Husband: His Wife

Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.

Ephesians 5:22

Lord, equip me to be the wife that my husband needs. Teach me to be the wife you have called me to be–a wife who will honor, respect, and submit to my husband as unto you, and that we may dwell together in divine unity (Ephesians 5:22). Help me to remember that the prayers for my husband and family are powerful and effective. Amen.

21. A Prayer for my Husband’s Emotions

Those who trust in themselves are fools, but those who walk in wisdom are kept safe.

Proverbs 28:26 

Lord, I pray for my husband’s heart, mind, and emotions. Govern his heart through the power of your Holy Spirit. Help him to channel his frustrations, fears, worries, joys, and griefs through the lens of Scripture. Help him to be aware of the emotions he is feeling and to talk to you about it. I pray that he will not keep his negative emotions bottled up, but that he will go to you in prayer to process his thoughts and emotions. Amen.

22. Prayer for my Husband: His Relationships

Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.

Proverbs 13:20

I pray that you will surround him with godly relationships that will encourage him to be a godly man, husband and father. May is relationships seek to bless, unify, and maintain healthy, godly fellowship, and may his plans succeed through the counsel of many godly advisers (Proverbs 15:22). Amen.

23. Prayer for my Husband: His Spiritual Walk

I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.

Ephesians 4:1-2 

Lord, I pray for my husband’s spiritual walk with you. Help him to grow in faith and to walk with you each day. May he desire to spend time reading and studying your Word each day. Help him to gain wisdom and direction from your Word each day. Amen.

24. Prayer for my Husband: His Speech

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Ephesians 4:29

Lord, I pray for my husband’s speech. May his words be edifying and glorifying to you. Help him to choose his words carefully, and to speak words of peace and blessing to those around him. Amen.

25. Prayer for my Husband: His Repentance 

Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.

Proverbs 28:13

Lord, I pray that my husband will have a repentant heart. Your word says that those who conceal their sins do not prosper, but those who confess and renounce their sins will find mercy (Proverbs 28:13). I ask that he will turn from sin and turn towards you. May he ask you to seek his heart, and may you lead him in the way everlasting (Psalm 139:23-24). Amen.

26. Prayer for my Husband: His Deliverance 

The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

Psalm 18:2-3

Lord, I pray that my husband will call upon you for salvation and deliverance. May you be his Rock, Fortress, and Deliverer, his God in whom he takes refuge. Please be his shield of salvation and mighty stronghold. Deliver him from the clutches of sin, the schemes of Satan, and from the hands of his enemies. In Jesus’ name, amen.

27. A Prayer for my Husband’s Obedience

My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity.

Proverbs 3:1-3

Lord, I pray for my husband’s obedience. I pray that he will listen to your teaching and follow you wholeheartedly. Help him to not waver to the right or the left, but to stay focused and fixed on you–even in the midst of difficult circumstances. I pray that he will not forget your teaching, but will keep your commands in his heart always. Amen.

28. Prayer for my Husband: His Self-Image 

For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.

Romans 8:29

Lord, today I say a prayer for my husband’s self-image. I ask that he will find his identity and purpose in you. Help him to remember that he is created in your image. May he not find identity in the fleeting pleasures of this world, but help him to find his true identity and self-image in who you have called him to be. Amen.

29. Prayer for my Husband: His Faith

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

James 1:5

Lord, I pray that you will grow my husband’s faith in you each day. Help him to find help, hope, and encouragement through his faith. Lord, I pray that you will increase my husband’s faith to believe in what he cannot yet see with his eyes. As he spends time in your Word and through prayer, help his faith in you to grow. In Jesus’ name, amen.

30. A Prayer for my Husband’s Future 

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”  

Jeremiah 29:11

Lord, I pray for my husband’s future. I believe that you have plans to prosper him, and not to harm him. In the midst of dark and difficult days he may face, help him to remember that you are for him, and not against him. May he be encouraged when he remembers that you promise to give him a bright hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11). Amen.

31. Prayer for my Husband: His Family 

Blessed are those who fear the Lord, who find great delight in his commands.

Psalm 112:1 

Lord, I pray for my husband’s immediate and extended family. I pray that you will surround them with your love, grace, and protection. I pray for the salvation of those family members who do not yet know you. Help my husband to be a light in the darkness, and to shine the light of your love to those around him. In Jesus’ name, amen.

32. A Prayer for my Husband’s Work

Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings; they will not serve before officials of low rank.

Proverbs 22:29

Lord, I pray for my husband’s work and occupation. Give him a sense of purpose and motivation as he does the work you have called him to do. Bless him and the fruit of his labor. May he cultivate positive relationships with those in his work environment, and may he shine your love, grace and truth to those around him. Amen.

33. A Prayer for my Husband’s Desires 

Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.  

Psalm 37:4

Lord, I pray for my husband’s desires. May he delight himself in you, and may you give him the desires of his heart. I pray that his desires will line up with your will and with your Word. Help him to make spending time with you a priority, and talk to you about his dreams and desires. Amen.

34. Prayer for my Husband: His Wisdom 

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. 

Proverbs 1:7

Lord, I pray that my husband will grow in wisdom through your Word. Help him to not seek the wisdom of this world, for it is foolishness to you (1 Corinthians 3:19). Help him to seek you and your Word to gain a heart of wisdom and insight that will guide his thoughts, attitudes, choices, and decisions. I pray that he will also seek the wisdom of others in his life–other godly men who will continue to encourage him in his faith. Amen.

35. Prayer for my Husband: His Legacy 

The blameless spend their days under the Lord’s care, and their inheritance will endure forever.

Psalm 37:18

Lord, I pray for my husband’s legacy. Help him to pass down the wisdom, knowledge, and understanding from your Word to the generations that will come after him. Help him to pass down a spiritual blessing and inheritance to his children and grandchildren. Help him to instill godly wisdom and character into our family, and may they greatly benefit from his influence. May my husband have an eternal impact on our family that will remain for generations to come. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
