What does God say about Spring?
When spring is mentioned in Scripture, the Hebrew word malqôš (מַלְקוֹשׁ) is used, which refers to spring rain or “latter rain” that often occurred during the months of March and April (source). These spring rains produced plentiful summer crops that were harvested and enjoyed by the people.
The Bible not only mentions the season of spring, but springs of water in the form of wells, cisterns and streams. We will also look at some of these Bible verses, since abundant water sources often provided plentiful fields, gardens, plants, flowers, and other vegetation.
What does Spring Represent in the Bible?
The season of spring has significant meaning in Scripture. Spring rains indicated God’s blessing to the people of Israel when they obeyed his commands (Deuteronomy 11:13-15). Spring rains also represented God’s presence among his people, as God poured out his Word like spring rains (Hosea 6:3, Job 29:23).
We are also instructed in the book of James to be patient during times of suffering and to wait for the Lord’s deliverance like a farmer patiently waits for spring rains (James 5:7). May these Bible verses about spring give you comfort and strength to wait patiently for the Lord to produce a harvest of righteousness in your life!
Bible Verses About Spring (The Season)
So if you faithfully obey the commands I am giving you today—to love the Lord your God and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul— then I will send rain on your land in its season, both autumn and spring rains, so that you may gather in your grain, new wine and olive oil. I will provide grass in the fields for your cattle, and you will eat and be satisfied. Deuteronomy 11:13-15
They waited for me as for showers and drank in my words as the spring rain. Job 29:23

“Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.” Hosea 6:3

Be glad, people of Zion, rejoice in the Lord your God, for he has given you the autumn rains because he is faithful. He sends you abundant showers, both autumn and spring rains, as before. Joel 2:23

Ask the Lord for rain in the springtime; it is the Lord who sends the thunderstorms. He gives showers of rain to all people, and plants of the field to everyone. Zechariah 10:1

My beloved spoke and said to me, “Arise, my darling, my beautiful one, come with me. See! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come, the cooing of doves is heard in our land. The fig tree forms its early fruit; the blossoming vines spread their fragrance. Arise, come, my darling; my beautiful one, come with me.” Song of Songs 2:11-13
Reflection: Though the book of Song of Songs is primarily a book about love between a husband and wife, the beautiful imagery in this passage is a powerful picture of hope and transformation. The husband is saying to his beloved that the dreary season of winter is behind them, and that they can joyfully look forward to fields of flowers and cooing doves.
The winter season is usually associated with darkness and stagnation. Not very much is able to grow in the winter. In our spiritual lives, when we are in a winter season, we may experience a trial where it may be difficult to see God at work in our lives. But when spring comes, the earth is bursting with sunshine and new life. In the springtime, we can experience a fresh wave of hope and joy.

As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: Isaiah 55:10-11a
It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands. Isaiah 55:11b-12
Reflection: This passage in Isaiah does not specifically mention the word spring, but it beautifully describes how God’s Word accomplishes the Lord’s purpose–just as the rain nourishes the earth and produces a wonderful crop. I love the imagery of God’s words blooming and flourishing in our hearts like a beautiful garden budding from spring rains.

Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. James 5:7

Bible Verses About Well Springs
Here is a list of Bible verses where God specifically refers to springs as water sources (wells, cisterns, brooks, streams, pools, etc). Wherever there are springs of water, there is fresh vegetation and new life nearby! Many of these Scriptures speak of springs as spiritual renewal and restoration. When we turn from our sinful ways and seek God’s face, we will experience spiritual revival as God nourishes our souls.
It was you who opened up springs and streams; you dried up the ever-flowing rivers. Psalm 74:15
Blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage. As they pass through the Valley of Baka, they make it a place of springs; the autumn rains also cover it with pools. They go from strength to strength, till each appears before God in Zion. Psalm 84:5-7
He makes springs pour water into the ravines; it flows between the mountains. They give water to all the beasts of the field; the wild donkeys quench their thirst. The birds of the sky nest by the waters; they sing among the branches. Psalm 104:10-12
He waters the mountains from his upper chambers; the land is satisfied by the fruit of his work. He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for people to cultivate— bringing forth food from the earth: wine that gladdens human hearts, oil to make their faces shine, and bread that sustains their hearts. The trees of the Lord are well watered, the cedars of Lebanon that he planted. Psalm 104:13-16
Reflection: This beautiful passage in Psalm 104 describes God’s bountiful provision. Through the flow of springs, the earth is watered and nourished, and all of God’s creation benefits from its refreshing waters.
He turned the desert into pools of water and the parched ground into flowing springs; there he brought the hungry to live, and they founded a city where they could settle. Psalm 107:35-36
Tremble, earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob, who turned the rock into a pool, the hard rock into springs of water. Psalm 114:7-8
Like a muddied spring or a polluted well are the righteous who give way to the wicked. Proverbs 25:26

They will neither hunger nor thirst, nor will the desert heat or the sun beat down on them. He who has compassion on them will guide them and lead them beside springs of water. Isaiah 49:10
The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail. Isaiah 58:11
“My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.” Jeremiah 2:13

He said in a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water.” Revelation 14:7

Bible Verses About Springing Forth/Up

Faithfulness springs forth from the earth, and righteousness looks down from heaven. Psalm 85:11
A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night. Yet you sweep people away in the sleep of death— they are like the new grass of the morning: In the morning it springs up new, but by evening it is dry and withered. Psalm 90:4-6
Senseless people do not know, fools do not understand, that though the wicked spring up like grass and all evildoers flourish, they will be destroyed forever. But you, Lord, are forever exalted. Psalm 92:6-8
