Did you know that you can use powerful Armor of God prayers to pray with passion and purpose? More than ever, we need to clothe ourselves with the Armor of God as we daily fight spiritual battles. Why should we equip ourselves with the Armor of God? Because we live in a fierce, dark world. Hatred, anger, and sin run rampant, and everywhere we turn, we are surrounded by brokenness and pain.
How do we shine the light of Christ in a world filled with such darkness?
We must gird ourselves with the Armor of God and surround ourselves with prayer to live as beacons of hope–shining brightly like lighthouses against the raging waves of the enemy.
This means we must cover ourselves in prayer. Using Armor of God prayers and Scripture is a great way to combat the enemy and walk in the victory we have through Christ.
What is the Armor of God?
The Armor of God is a passage in Ephesians 6:10-17 that outlines how Christians can use spiritual armor to stand against the schemes of Satan. The apostle Paul uses the analogy of physical armor to explain how we as Christians can equip ourselves with the power and truth of God’s Word and fight spiritual battles.
In the same way that we cover ourselves with clothing each morning, we can spiritually cover ourselves from head to toe with the Armor of God, and claim victory in our lives through Christ before our day even gets started.
Let’s better understand what the Armor of God is by examining Ephesians 6:10-17 more closely:
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.
In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
Ephesians 6:10-17
Through the words of the apostle Paul, God imparts words of wisdom and instruction on how we are to fight the spiritual battles we face in life. Here are at least three truths to remember when we put on the full Armor of God:
1. Be strong in the Lord–through his power, not our own
We can only be strong through the strength and power we have through Christ. Our own strength will falter and fall short, but when we rely on the strength and might of the Lord, we will be able to stand against the schemes of the enemy.
He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. (Isaiah 40:29)
The joy of the Lord is our strength. (Nehemiah 8:10)
The Lord arms us with strength and keeps our ways secure. (Psalm 18:32)
Praise God that we can rely on his strength to fight our battles!
2. Put on the full Armor of God to stand against the enemy
Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. Ephesians 6:11
God equips us with his powerful armor, but action is also required on our part–we must put it on! Putting on the Armor of God does not mean sitting idly on the sidelines while God does all the work. Through faith in him, we actively put on God’s armor and trust him to equip us with what we need to stand firm in battle.
3. Our spiritual battles are not against people
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Ephesians 6:12
This is a truth that we need to remind ourselves of over and over. We live in the natural world. With our five senses we can see, smell, taste, touch, and hear the world around us. We interact with friends and family, and hustle through our busy days surrounded by people going to and fro.
But there is also an unseen world. There are spiritual realms of darkness, and forces of evil that we do not see (Ephesians 6:12). One biblical commentator referred to principalities as “a spiritual army that is organized and established into ranks and is under the headship of Satan who comes against us” (source).
But we do NOT need to fear this realm of darkness. If God is for us, who can be against us?! (Romans 8:31) Moreover, Jesus is the Light of the world (John 8:12). No darkness stands a chance against the brilliant power and might of our Lord.
Paul declared this in Romans 8:38-39,
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
When we equip ourselves with the full Armor of God, we can be confident that through Christ, we have victory over our enemies.
What are the Six Pieces of the Armor of God?
Now that we have a better understanding of Ephesians 6:10-13, we can move to the actual pieces of armor.
According to Ephesians 6:14-17, there are six pieces of armor:
The Belt of Truth
The Breastplate of Righteousness
The Shoes of Peace
The Shield of Faith
The Helmet of Salvation
The Sword of the Spirit
How do you Pray Armor of God Prayers?
After we have identified the pieces of armor, we can formulate powerful prayers to pray! A simple way to pray the full Armor of God is to pray each piece of armor one at a time. You can find Scriptures related to each piece of armor, and use those Scriptures to pray God’s Word. Let’s use the various Scriptures below to create powerful Armor of God prayers!
Armor of God Prayers: The Belt of Truth
Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist…
Ephesians 6:14
Reflections: The very first piece of armor that we are to put on is the Belt of Truth. The foundation of our faith in Christ is built upon the truth of God’s Word. If we are not walking in the truth, we will not be able to identify the lies of Satan. Because he is the father of lies, his schemes hinge upon deception and falsehood. When we know the truth of who God is, we will be able to stand firm against the enemy!
Scriptures on Truth:
“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32
Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long. Psalm 25:5
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6
Armor of God Prayer: Lord, I ask that you guide me with your truth today. The enemy is the father of lies, and he will try to lead me away from your truth. Help me to meditate on your truth that sets me free. In moments of fear or doubt, help me to hold firmly to the truth of your Word. Amen.
Armor of God Prayer: The Breastplate of Righteousness
…with the breastplate of righteousness in place…
Ephesians 6:14b
Reflections: Did you know that our righteousness is like filthy rags? (Isaiah 64:6) Even on our best days, our righteousness does not measure up to God’s standard of holiness. That’s why we need the righteousness of God. Through faith in Jesus, we now have access to his righteousness. Now, instead of filthy rags, we can now clothe ourselves with the righteousness of Christ.
Scriptures on Righteousness:
This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. Romans 3:22
You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness. Romans 6:18
Armor of God Prayer: Lord, thank you that through faith in you, I have the righteousness of Christ. I am now filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of your name! (Philippians 1:11) Give me the strength to walk in the power of your righteousness each day. Amen.
Armor of God Prayer: The Shoes of Peace
…and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.
Ephesians 6:15
Reflections: No soldier would ever think to go into battle without the proper footwear. Just as physical shoes give our feet protection from rocky terrain, the peace of God gives us spiritual protection in the midst of our spiritual battles. Have you laced up your shoes of peace today? May the peace of God guard your heart and mind today in Christ Jesus!
Scriptures on Peace:
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you. Isaiah 26:3
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7

Armor of God Prayer: I praise you Lord, for your peace that you have freely given to me by your Spirit. I believe that your peace will guard my heart and mind as I trust in you. (Philippians 4:7) Help me to put on my shoes of peace today, and to walk in your power and victory! Amen.
Armor of God Prayer: The Shield of Faith
In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
Ephesians 6:16
Reflections: What a comfort it is to know that we are protected with God’s shield of faith! Scripture informs us that faith is confidence in what we hope for, and assurance of what we do not see (Hebrews 11:1).
Remember that spiritual battles are fought against unseen forces of evil in heavenly realms (Ephesians 6: 12). We must exercise faith in Christ’s power and might, and trust that he will surround us with his favor and protection!
Scriptures on Faith:
Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. Hebrews 11:1
Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. 1 Corinthians 16:13
Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. 1 Peter 5:8-9
Armor of God Prayer: Lord, thank you for protecting me from the flaming arrows of the evil one. May your faith keep me rooted and grounded on a firm foundation, as I continue to serve you. I declare that my faith in you can move mountains. (Matthew 17:20) Amen.
Armor of God Prayer: The Helmet of Salvation
Take the helmet of salvation…
Ephesians 6:17
Reflections: Praise God for the gift of salvation we have through Christ! The last thing the enemy wants is for us to have salvation. His aim is to steal, kill, and destroy God’s people, but Satan was already defeated when Jesus on the cross declared “It is finished.” (John 19:30)
The atonement for our sins has been paid for on the cross, and now we have freedom, forgiveness, and salvation through Christ. Salvation is the ultimate blow of defeat to the enemy, and now we can confidently say, “Death, where is your sting?” (1 Corinthians 15:54-56)
Scriptures on Salvation:
For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Thessalonians 5:9
‘And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’ Acts 2:21
They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.” Acts 16:31
Armor of God Prayer: Thank you Lord, that my salvation in you is secure. Because of your sacrifice on the cross, I have salvation through Christ, and can confidently put on my helmet of salvation! Help me to spread the good news of the Gospel to those around me, so that others will find salvation through you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Armor of God Prayer: The Sword of the Spirit
…and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
Ephesians 6:17
Reflections: Have you ever noticed that the Armor of God begins and ends with truth? The first piece of the Armor of God is the Belt of Truth. The last piece of the armor in Ephesians 6:17 is the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. As warriors of the Word, we can use the Sword of the Spirit to fight our battles with God’s truth and power.
We can’t apply God’s truth in our lives without using the Sword of the Spirit. Each time you spend time studying the Bible to gain wisdom from God’s Word, you are wielding your sword and preparing for battle!
Scriptures on God’s Word:
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4:12
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17
Armor of God Prayer: Thank you Lord, for your powerful Word! May I use your Word as an offensive weapon against the enemy. Help me to speak your Word with confidence and assurance. You are the Living Word, and you powerfully fight my battles. (John 1:1) Amen.
