I recently had the joy of sitting down with author and speaker Kate Motaung on the Praying with Victory podcast, and it was a conversation that left me both inspired and deeply encouraged. Kate’s gentle wisdom and testimony reminded me how beautifully God weaves prayer into every part of our story when we invite Him in.
Kate shared that her journey with prayer started early—watching her mother faithfully attend weekly prayer meetings and pray with others over the phone, even in the middle of trials. One story that stood out was how her mother, after being diagnosed with breast cancer, leaned heavily on the prayers of others. That legacy of prayer became a foundation for Kate, one she carried with her into adulthood and across continents.
When Kate moved to Cape Town, South Africa, to serve in missions at the age of 20, prayer took on new meaning. Far from home, she found strength not just in her own prayers, but in the faithful intercession of others back home. It’s a beautiful reminder that we’re never truly alone—God surrounds us with a community of believers, lifting one another up in prayer.
Now, as a mom of three young adults and a writer of Christian books, including 101 Prayers for Comfort in Difficult Times, Kate continues to see God move in response to prayer. She spoke about the countless times she and her family have witnessed God’s faithfulness through answered prayer—sometimes in small ways, sometimes in life-changing ones.
One of the most comforting things Kate shared was this: Don’t overthink it. Prayer doesn’t have to be eloquent or long. Just come to God as you are. If you’re unsure what to say, turn to the Word. Scripture is full of prayers—Paul’s letters and the Psalms are great places to start. Let God’s Word guide your words.
As we prepare for the upcoming Praying with Victory Summit, Kate’s message is a timely one. In a world full of distractions and false comforts, we need the reminder to turn to God first. Before we scroll, before we stress, before we speak—pray. He is always ready to listen.
Whether you’re just beginning to build a prayer life or you’ve been walking with God for years, may Kate’s story remind you that prayer isn’t just something we do—it’s a way of being with God.
A Prayer to Draw Near
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of prayer—that we can come to You anytime, just as we are. Thank You for examples like Kate’s mother, who modeled a life rooted in communion with You. Help us, Lord, to quiet the noise around us and turn to You first. Teach us to pray Your Word when we have no words of our own. Strengthen our faith as we wait on You, and help us to trust that You hear every whispered prayer.
We long to know You more, to walk in step with You, and to make prayer not just a part of our day, but the heart of our lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
