“I’m so sorry, Mrs. Baker, but we can’t allow you to withdraw from your account today.”
I stared at the bank teller in utter confusion as she handed me back my driver’s license. All I need is twenty bucks–I can’t have twenty dollars from my own account? I wondered in astonishment. I started to develop a sinking feeling in my stomach. Trying to retain my composure, (and grateful that no one was in line behind me), I asked her what the problem was.
It turned out that my driver’s license had expired the day before, and I was not allowed to withdraw any money from my account with an expired license. I knew there was something else I needed to do this week! I thought to myself. Thoroughly embarrassed, I thanked the teller and slipped out of the bank with my tail between my legs. I felt about as bankrupt as a penniless pauper.
I was recently reminded of this humiliating incident when reflecting on the book of Ephesians.
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. Ephesians 1:3
This passage reveals that though I may not have much earthly riches, my spiritual bank account is always full. On the days when I feel emotionally depleted, I remember that I am already rich with the incredible spiritual blessings of Christ!
If you have ever had moments of doubt regarding your amazing inheritance in Christ, here are three truths from God’s Word that you can always bank on:
Truth # 1: Your spiritual account is always abundant
According to Ephesians 1:3-8, we are…
- chosen
- holy
- blameless
- predestined
- adopted
- marked with the seal of the Holy Spirit
In the spiritual reserve of our souls we have abundant riches of God’s grace, forgiveness, wisdom and understanding (vs 7-8). In Ephesians 3 we discover that out of Christ’s glorious riches we are filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Now that is abundance!
Truth #2: Your spiritual account is always available
Not only do we have abundant wealth and riches in Christ, but we have unlimited access to an account that is available to us at any time. Unlike my alarming experience with the bank teller, we don’t have to renew our spiritual ID cards in order to gain access to the throne of God.
Our identities are found in Him, and our cards have been stamped, sealed by the Holy Spirit and signed with the blood of our precious Savior. We can now come before our great God with complete confidence that He will meet our every need–and we can never overdraw our account with Him!
And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19
Truth #3: You spiritual account is always active
Have you ever had a savings account become inactive or dormant? Not so with your spiritual inheritance. We have the living, breathing, life of God Almighty within us. He is the Word of life, and He is alive and active, penetrating deeply into the marrow of our souls. As we fill our hearts with His words of life, He makes daily deposits into our accounts.
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4:12
So the next time life throws you a curve ball or you are hit with an unexpected turn on your journey, remember this: you can take it to the bank.
Exchange the poverty of your soul for the abundant riches of God’s grace. [bctt tweet=”Exchange the poverty of your soul for the abundant riches of God’s grace.” username=”christinbaker12″]
Trade in your rusty pennies of brokenness for the immeasurable treasures of His truth.
Swap your heavy burdens for the spiritual blessings we have in Christ.
Go ahead and swipe your card! Your account is abundant. Your blessings are always available–and your inheritance is fully active.
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:3

Thanks for stopping by, Kelly! 🙂
And the business of having to prove our identity to access His riches?
Unnecessary!
We are His and He made us — He knows us by name and He has taken us into His family! No need for proof of identity!
Wonderfully encouraging post!! I loved your analogy of our bank accounts as compared to the greatness and abundance of our spiritual accounts.”
I pinned the graphic of all we are in Christ.
Thanks so much for sharing! I leave here today uplifted in Christ! 🙂
I love that my spiritual bank account is always available. God never gets tired of me. Thank you, Christin, for these truths!
Your story, about the expired license, is classic! I had to smile. That is something that would happen to me. ??
I love that you remind us about our spiritual bank accounts always being available. Isn’t that just like God?? He is always available to us- even when we do not prioritize Him. It is very convicting to think of the days I spent preoccupied with praying about my problems, rather than spending time listening to Him.
My prayer today- Lord, what would You like to say to me today? Who would You like me to show Your love to? How can I serve You today?
I love that my spiritual bank account is always available. God never gets tired of me. Thanks for sharing
