Have you ever played one of those trust games at a spiritual retreat or a camp where you are encouraged to lean back, close your eyes and to fall backwards, trusting that the people behind you are going to catch you?
Those activities are a lot of fun–and teach a huge lesson on how important it is to trust and have faith in those around us.
Today we’re talking about the shield of faith, which is a powerful piece of armor that we can use to stand strong against the blazing arrows of the enemy.

Life is full of challenges, and as we journey through it, we face moments when we feel like we’re under attack—whether it’s through doubt, fear, or the struggles that life throws our way. But as believers, we have been given a powerful weapon to protect us: the shield of faith.
In Ephesians 6:16, Paul reminds us to “take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one.” Faith isn’t just a passive belief; it is an active defense, one that shields us from the attacks of the enemy and keeps us grounded in God’s promises.
Faith: Our Strong Defense
Faith is more than just a belief in God. It is a deep trust in His character, His Word, and His mighty promises. This confidence and hope is what protects us. When the enemy sends his fiery darts of doubt, lies, fear, temptation, and discouragement, faith stands strong as our powerful shield of defense.
Think about it: the enemy loves to sow seeds of doubt in our hearts. He whispers lies like, “You’re not good enough,” or “God won’t come through for you.” But Romans 10:17 tells us, “Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”
Have you spoken the Word of God over yourself lately?
Have you proclaimed the truth of God’s character and omnipotence?
Have you spoken the Word of Truth over yourself so that you can HEAR His promises?
When we immerse ourselves in God’s Word, our faith grows stronger–and the stronger our faith, the more powerful our shield!
Faith in Action
So how does the shield of faith work in our daily lives?
It starts with belief.
Hebrews 11:1 defines faith as “the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”
When we hold onto God’s promises, even when we can’t see the outcome of our circumstances, our faith in Christ allows us to stand firm.
We trust that God is with us– that He is for us, and that He has already won the battle over sin and death through Jesus.
Faith isn’t about having everything figured out. It’s about trusting God to do what He said He would do, even when we don’t fully understand His plan.
Jesus told us in Matthew 17:20,
“Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
Our small, seemingly insignificant amount of faith, when placed in God, has incredible power. The enemy cannot stand against our faith because it comes from the very source of power—God Himself.
Overcoming the Enemy’s Attacks
The enemy’s attacks often come in the form of doubts or negative thoughts that try to penetrate our hearts and minds. He uses fear, insecurity, and anxiety to derail our confidence in God’s plan for our lives.
But here’s the truth: 1 Peter 1:7 reminds us that “the tested genuineness of your faith is more precious than gold that perishes.”
Even when we face trials, our faith becomes refined, and our shield becomes even stronger.
Our faith, when tested, will come forth as pure, fine gold. King Solomon had hundreds of shining shields made of solid gold to display the Lord’s majestic splendor in his palace (1 Kings 10:16-17).
We can be reminded of how God refines our faith so that we come out of each trial stronger, gleaming with the glory and splendor of our great God.
Faith also helps us resist temptation.
James 1:6 says, “But let him ask in faith, with no doubting.” When we choose to rely on God’s strength instead of our own, we are able to say “no” to the schemes of the enemy. Faith in Christ reminds us that God has given us the power of love and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).
Trusting in God’s Faithfulness
The shield of faith doesn’t just protect us from the enemy’s lies and attacks—it also reminds us of God’s faithfulness. When we trust in God’s promises, we are anchored in the truth that He will always be faithful.
The enemy wants us to believe that God’s promises are too good to be true. He wants us to doubt that God will provide, protect, and fulfill His Word.
But when we stand firm in faith, we declare that God’s promises are true, and the enemy has no room to work.
Strength and Faith in Jesus
Finally, remember that our shield of faith is not a shield of our own making. Philippians 4:13 reminds us, “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”
No matter what you face today, remember that you have been equipped with the shield of faith.
The enemy’s schemes may come, but your faith in the Lord will protect you.
Keep your eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith! Keep trusting in His promises, and hold up your shield of faith with victory.
You are more than a conqueror through Christ!
A Prayer of Faith
Lord, thank you for the shield of faith that protects us from the enemy’s attacks. Help us to strengthen our faith by constantly seeking Your Word and trusting in Your promises. May we always stand firm, knowing that You are our refuge and strength. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Stay strong in your faith, and let the shield of faith guard your heart and mind today!
