What is Unconditional Love?
The term “unconditional love” has been coined in many Christian circles today, and comes from the original Greek word agapaō, which is used at least 142 times in the New Testament. Agapaō means to love someone, to welcome, to entertain, to be fond of, or to love dearly (source). This type of unconditional love is used in Scriptures such as,
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you…
Matthew 5:43-44
Agapaō is closely related to the Greek word agapē, which also means affection, good will, love, benevolence, and brotherly love (source). Examples of Bible verses with this Greek word are:
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23
“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.” John 15:9
No matter which form of the Greek word you use, one thing is certain: God is love. (1 John 4:8)
He is the very essence of love, and he pours himself out to us and fills us with his love. Because he has loved us, the Holy Spirit equips us to love others with the same unconditional love he has given to us.

A Prayer of Thanks for God’s Unconditional Love
Lord, thank you that nothing in this life can separate us from your amazing love. When we experience the pain of heartache, suffering, rejection, and even death–help us to remember that you will never leave us. Help us to walk confidently in this life knowing that we are secure in your unfailing love. Amen.
You have loved us with an everlasting love, and you lavish it on us abundantly. You are our Father, and we are your children. Lord, thank you for your unending love. Direct our hearts into the abundance of your love, and give us strength and perseverance through the power of Christ.
Thank you that you have loved us with your eternal love. Give us the strength and supernatural ability through your Holy Spirit to love others around us. Teach us, Lord, to be humble and gentle. Help us to seek to meet the needs of others before we seek to have our own needs met, and teach us to be a servant to those around us.
Through the power of your love, give us the strength and patience to bear with one another in your perfect love. Amen.
