Bible Verses About God’s Plan and Purpose for your Child

There are many Bible verses that talk about the unique plan and purpose God has for each of our lives. These Bible verses are great reminders that God has a special plan for your child. If you are planning a baby shower for a family member or loved one, these Bible verses are great for saying a blessing over the mother and baby at the baby shower!

Jeremiah 1:5

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you…

In this Scripture, God is calling Jeremiah to speak to the people of Israel as his prophet and mouthpiece. Jeremiah doesn’t think that he is up for the job, but God reassured him that before Jeremiah was born, he knew him, and had great plans for his life. What a blessing it is to know that God has also called our children for his purposes, even before they were born!

Psalm 139:13

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

you knit me together in my mother's womb

This is a very popular verse for giving evidence of the beauty of human life at the beginning of conception. It is wonderful to know that God made us and each of our children uniquely special,  before we were even born.

Psalm 139:14

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

I am fearfully and wonderfully made baby shower scriptures

The Hebrew word for fearfully in the context of this Scripture means: to stand in awe of, or to be awed (source). God made us so wonderfully and intricately that we can stand in all of how he has created us in his wisdom and providence. Praise God for his wonderful works in our lives, and in the lives of our children!

Psalm 139:16

Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

Many of us create baby books for our children when they are babies. We record as many precious memories as we can, and fill their books with cute photos of them from their early years. Like this Scripture says, all of our days were written in God’s book before we were born.

Before we ever entered the world, God knew we would be here, and he knows all of the things we will do on this earth. It is so comforting to remember how intimately God knows us. In the same way, God’s hand is upon our children, and he will watch over them with his loving care.

Psalm 113:9

He settles the childless woman in her home as a happy mother of children. Praise the Lord.

Celebrating with a mother at a baby shower is such a happy occasion. Praise the Lord for the blessing of a new child!

Ephesians 2:10

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

God's handiwork

Our children were created as God’s special handiwork. Some Bible translations use the word “masterpiece”. As you celebrate your loved one at the baby shower you are planning, remember that God created your child for a special plan.

1 Samuel 1:27

“I prayed for this child, and the LORD has granted me what I asked of him.”

Hannah in the book of 1 Samuel prayed fervently for a son, and God looked upon her with compassion and remembered her prayer. Like Hannah, may we as parents pray daily for our children, and daily offer them up to the Lord in prayer.

Check out this post with more on Hannah’s story here.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Jeremiah 29:11 baby shower scripture

This is one of the most popular Bible verses used for encouragement as we trust God with our futures. The Israelites were living during a time of exile when the prophet Jeremiah was used by God to write these words.

God spoke to the people and reassured them that though they were in captivity because of their disobedience, God didn’t forget about them. In fact, he had a hope and future for them that was for their good and not for their demise. May this Scripture also give you comfort and strength to know that God has a plan and purpose for your child.

Psalm 22:9-10

Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust in you, even at my mother’s breast. From birth I was cast on you; from my mother’s womb you have been my God.

This is a powerful Psalm of David. Even though he is experiencing trouble and hardship from his enemies, he reminds himself in this psalm that God is with him. Even when he was born from his mother’s womb, God was with him. May our prayer be the same for our children–that the Lord will be their Comforter and Strength from the time they are born.

Bible Verses for a Baby Shower: Scriptures About Teaching Children the Ways of God

It is so important that we teach our children the ways of the Lord as they grow. These Scriptures are great reminders that our children are in God’s hands, and that the Lord will direct, lead, and teach them.

Psalm 8:2 (NKJV)

Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have ordained strength, because of Your enemies, that You may silence the enemy and the avenger.

Note: The printable for this Bible verse is written in the NLT (New Living Translation).

The Hebrew word for strength in this passage (ʿōz) means strength in various applications (force, security, majesty, or praise). It also means boldness, loud, might and power (source). Although our children may be small and helpless when they enter the world, God’s Word says that they establish the power and strength of God.

Isaiah 54:13

“All your children will be taught by the LORD, and great will be their peace.”

In this passage, God was speaking to the people of Israel through the prophet Isaiah. Though the Israelites had disobeyed the Lord, God was calling them back to him and beautifully described the bright  future of Zion. God did not abandon his people, but re-established his covenant of peace with them.

When we commit our lives to the Lord and dedicate our children to him, he will also bless our families, and our children will receive instruction and direction from God. What a blessing it is to know that our children will be taught by the Lord!

Proverbs 22:6 (NKJV)

Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.

Note: This printable is written in the New International Version (NIV).

The Hebrew word for “train up” is ḥānaḵ, which means to initiate or discipline; to dedicate, or train up

(source). This same Hebrew word is used when King Solomon dedicated the temple to the Lord (1 Kings 8:63). When we train up our children by giving them a solid foundation in God’s Word, we can dedicate them to the Lord, trusting that he will guide and direct their paths.

Proverbs 20:7

The righteous lead blameless lives; blessed are their children after them.

Numbers 6:24-26

“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.”

This is one of my favorite Scriptures to read as a blessing over my children. As our children grow, they need to know that God loves them so much, and that his face shines upon them with grace and peace.

Psalm 145:4

Let each generation tell its children of your mighty acts; let them proclaim your power. (NLT)
