Bible Verses about God Creating the Ocean

The book of Genesis tells us that the earth was void and empty, and that darkness covered the surface of the deep. We also know that the Spirit of God hovered over the waters (Gen 1:2).

It’s hard to imagine what a formless, empty, void may have looked like, but we are told that water existed before the world was created.

In verse 6, God spoke and commanded the waters to separate. The expanse (or vault) was called the sky. In verse 9, God gathered waters under the sky to one place, and allowed dry ground to appear. These gathered waters were called seas –and God saw that it was good.

Nehemiah 9:6
