Where are Teachers Mentioned in the Bible?
The Bible has much to say about teachers. God himself is our perfect Teacher, and through his Word he gives us wisdom and understanding (Proverbs 3:1, Psalm 86:11). While Jesus was on earth, he was referred to as “rabbi”, which means “teacher” (John 1:38).
His disciples eagerly followed him daily, and he taught them powerful truths about God, the purpose for which he came, and about the Kingdom of God (Mark 4:25-27). Jesus also directly addressed the Pharisees and “teachers of the law” of that time, warning them to turn from their hypocrisy and sin (Matthew 23:12-21).
The apostle Paul was a dedicated teacher of the law who was called as a missionary to teach the Gospel to unbelievers (1 Timothy 2:7, 2 Timothy 1:11). Paul also wrote about false teachers during that time, who deliberately led others astray by teaching false doctrines (2 Peter 2:1).
Teachers were very important in Scripture, were held in high regard, and were called to a much higher standard (James 3:1). This speaks to the tremendous influence and authority teachers had in the Bible, and in our modern society.
