We have all experienced the heartbreaking pain of losing a loved one. During those times of difficulty, we can lean on God’s Word and find comfort and strength in his promises. When I lost my dad as a young teenager, I remember relying on God’s Word to help me and my family through that difficult time. Take a look at 40 powerful Scriptures for grief that you can hold close to your heart as you walk through your sorrow. Know that you are never alone.
What does the Bible say About Comforting the Grieving?
The Bible has much to say about comforting those who are brokenhearted. One of my favorite New Testament stories is when Lazarus, the brother of Mary and Martha died and was raised to life by Jesus (John 11:1-44). Even though Jesus knew that he was going to raise Lazarus from the dead, he was still greatly moved by the sorrow of Mary and Martha, and he wept in the midst of their grief and sorrow (John 11:33-36).
Jesus was also described as a “man of sorrows” in Isaiah 53:3–he knows and understands our pain. When we are experiencing great sorrow in our hearts, we can take great comfort in the truth that Jesus understands our grief, and is walking alongside us each day.
Scriptures for Grief in the Old Testament
Here are some encouraging Scriptures on grief from the Old Testament. I love this Scripture from Isaiah 61. These are the exact word Jesus read in the temple in Luke 4:21,
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor
and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn,
and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
to bestow on them a crown of beauty
instead of ashes,
the oil of joy
instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise
instead of a spirit of despair.
Isaiah 61:1a-3
This passage gives me so much peace, because Jesus came to not only bring us the amazing gift of eternal life, but to comfort all who mourn. Our days of mourning and sorrow last for a moment–and he adorns us with garments of praise and fills us with his glorious joy.

A Prayer for those who are Grieving
If you are grieving the loss of a loved one, may this prayer offer encouragement and strength for your soul.
Lord, I ask that you will comfort those who are grieving right now. Wrap them around your loving arms or grace and love. Let them know that you are right there with them through their pain and sorrow. May your unfailing love be their comfort, according to the promises in your Word (Psalm 119:76).
You are a loving Father who binds up the wounds of the brokenhearted, and keeps track of all our tears (Psalm 147:3, Psalm 56:8). Give them the strength they need at this time, and remind them that you will never leave or forsake them. Give their family peace, rest, and comfort, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
