Encouraging Bibles Verses on the Blessings of Friendship

Lucky for us, the Bible isn’t silent on the topic of friendship. These powerful friendship Bible verses are my personal favorites. They are the very ones I chose to feature on a set of friendship greeting cards! Consider who comes to mind when you read each of them. Send that friend a heartfelt note of appreciation.

A sweet friendship refreshes the soul.

(Proverbs 27:9 MSG)

Do you have a friend who leaves you feeling better every time you’re together? The one who you call when you’re blue? Some people just have the gift of making you feel better. Thank this friend for being the one to bring joy and laughter in your life.

Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God.

(Philippians 1:3 NLT)

This is another fitting friendship Scripture when it comes to expressing gratitude for your friendship.

You might choose to write a list of specific things you are grateful for when it comes to this friendship: I am thankful for our Saturday morning walks or I am thankful you went with me to chemo or I am thankful I can call you when I’m sad. Whatever it is you’re thankful for – share that and acknowledge that.

As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.

(Proverbs 27:17 NLT)

Your friendship has to be one that’s intimate if the two of you are going to be able to share hard truths with each other. If you have the kind of friend who can speak truth to you during those times when you’re making poor choices, this is a friendship to be honored. Thank her for sharing her wisdom. Acknowledge the ways you’ve grown because of her presence in your life.

How Can I Be a Blessing to a Friend?

One of the best ways to be a blessing to your best friend or other wonderful friends in your life is to send them a card letting them know that you are thinking of them. Here are some ways you can honor the friends in your life and  to remind them of how much of a blessing they are to you.

Five times to send a card honoring the way a friendship has blessed you

Be a Blessing to a Friend on a Random Date

The best day to send a note of gratitude to a friend? Today! Any day is a good day to write a note and send it in the mail. I often find that the day it finally arrives in a friend’s mailbox is ordained by God anyway.

My customers have reported the same thing. Sometimes a delayed letter actually arrives just in time. So don’t worry if it takes you a couple of days to gather supplies, write the note, address the envelope, and find a stamp.

The card will arrive on the day it is supposed to arrive.

Send an Encouraging Card on your Friend’s Birthday

Here’s the obvious choice: the birthday of a friend! Birthdays are the most natural day to celebrate someone you love. Use the occasion to write an especially meaningful note in their birthday card. Even if you don’t usually do cards or send cards, make an exception if the Holy Spirit is nudging you.

Be a Blessing to a Friend on your Own Birthday

Use your own birthday as a point to stop and remember all the many friendships that have blessed or continue to bless you. For example, you might choose to honor 50 people for your 50th birthday. Or make it easier on yourself and use the entire year of a milestone birthday to work on that list of cards!

I did this on my 30th birthday. I especially made an effort to reach out to the teachers and youth leaders who had helped form my faith. Each stage of life brings new friends and a new perspective so this is definitely an exercise worth repeating.

Send Best Wishes to a Friend on Valentine’s Day

I like to co-opt what is thought of as a romantic holiday and use it to celebrate all the people I am lucky enough to know and love, including dear friends. My 1 John 4:19 cards or postcards (We love because He first loved us) are a nice choice for this!

Send a Card During ‘Thinking of You Week’

If you have a fondness for mail-related holidays, you might want to take note of Thinking of You Week, which is celebrated during the second week of September. It’s a fun reminder to send some happy mail out into the world.

Be a Blessing to a Friend on Thanksgiving or Christmas

The end of year holidays always put me in the mood to take notice of all my blessings. A deep and lasting friendship is one of those! You might choose to set aside a little time to sit down and write to the friends who have been there for you throughout the past year.

Who was a good listener? Who helped with life’s logistics? Who was there through the tough time? Now is the time to reflect on the blessings of their true friendship.

Nine Encouraging Card Writing Prompts for Friends

Remember the time when…?

This is the perfect chance to reminisce. You could choose a comical moment and share a little laughter. Or you might recall the first time you met (summer camp, a long ago job, a church event).

Friendship Blessings Scripture: A friend loves at all times… Proverbs 17:17a NIV

The thing I love about you…

Choose the first attribute that pops into your head! You have my permission to keep this note short and sweet. State what you love about them and what it does for you.

Examples: I love your sense of humor. You add so much laughter to my life. Or I love your generosity. You inspire me to be more giving myself. I especially admire the way you…

Blessings of Friendship Scripture: Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 1 John 4:11 NIV

You have taught me…

I have a close friend who has a lot of challenging relationships in her life, especially with her adult children. However, she makes the choice to rest in the peace of Jesus despite her circumstances. She’s positive and she takes the time to ask about me even when her own struggles don’t seem to be changing.

Her example has challenged me to examine my own attitudes towards things that aren’t going the way I had hoped or expected. Maybe you can think of a friend whose actions and attitudes have had an equally strong impact on your life? She deserves to hear it!

Bible Verse on the Blessing of Friendship: Peace to you. 3 John 1:15a

Having you in my life is a blessing because…

Think about what your friend adds to your life. Is it wisdom and sound advice? Is it prayer? Is it a spirit of adventure? I like to think God uses our friendships to help grow us and that He puts people in our lives who add what is missing.

Blessings of Friendship Bible Verse: For the sake of my family and friends, I will say, “Peace be within you.” Psalm 122:8 NIV

I can’t thank you enough for walking me through…

Have you been through an especially hard season recently? Maybe you’re struggling with a relationship. Or maybe something unexpected like a job loss or diagnosis turned your life upside down. Or perhaps you’re in a season of grief.

When you’re well enough to reflect on the hard circumstances you’ve been through, take a moment to think about the friends who walked you through it and let them know how much they mean to you.

Blessings of Friendship Bible Verse: A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Proverbs 18:24 NIV

You were so patient…

Have you ever been through situations or seasons that took you a while to figure out? And while you were walking through it you needed to talk about it? If you have a friend who so patiently listened to you while you talked through it yet again, you just might want to acknowledge the gift of her patience and listening ear!

Encouraging Scripture About Friendship: Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well. 3 John 1:2 NIV

I really appreciated it when…

This is the prompt to use when your friend came through in a specific and tangible way that made your life so much better. I really appreciated it when you helped me move. Or I really appreciated it when you shared rides. Sometimes it is the practical help that shows the most love!

Bible Verse About Encouraging Others:

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 NIV

I knew you were a true friend when…

Can you recall a specific turning point in your relationship where you went from acquaintances to true friends? A time when your friend really came through for you in your time of need? Even if it was many years ago you can still use this as a prompt for writing a note of genuine appreciation.

Blessings of Friendship Scripture: Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Romans 12:10 NIV

God has used you to…

I firmly believe that God speaks to us and loves us through the people He puts in our life. Friendships are for blessings. Did God confirm something through the words of your friend? Did God answer your prayer through this person’s actions? Tell them the story!

Blessings of Friendship Bible Verse: Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. John 15:13 NIV

A Prayer of Thanksgiving for Good Friendship

Heavenly Father,

Thank you so much for the rich blessing of my true friends. They bring such joy to my life. Help me to appreciate the friends you have placed into my life by reaching out to them to send them words of encouragement and affirmation.

Whether they have helped me get through a difficult time in my life, or they have celebrated with me through the good times, they have been a great blessing in my life.

I am truly a better person because of the close bond I have developed with them. May you surround them with your unconditional love, and may you shine your love and grace upon them. In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
