Psalms of thanksgiving and praise are great psalms that lift up the name of God. If you are feeling down and are in need of encouragement, you can use psalms of praise and thanksgiving to praise God and uplift your soul! Cultivating a heart of praise and thanksgiving is a powerful way to take our minds off of our problems and focus on worshiping God in the midst of the difficult situations in our lives.
How is it possible to experience joy and thanksgiving in the midst of chaos and stress around us?
Through the power of praise and thanksgiving.
Let’s take a look at how we can radically ignite our prayer lives when we incorporate prayers of praise by focusing on psalms of thanksgiving.
The Power of Praise and Thanksgiving
All throughout Scripture, praise is used as a forceful weapon to defeat enemies and to declare victory in the Lord. In 2 Chronicles 20 king Jehoshaphat and the Israelites defeated the Moabites and Ammonites through their most powerful weapon: praise.
They marched to the lines of battle boldly declaring,
“Give thanks to the Lord, for his love endures forever.” (2 Chronicles 20:21)
When they reached the battleground, the Israelites discovered that their enemy was already defeated! (2 Chronicles 20:24)
(Read more about Jehoshaphat’s victorious praise session in this post on 7 Steps to Spiritual Victory!)
Paul and Silas in Acts 16:16-40 powerfully sang hymns of praise to God after they were wrongfully beaten and thrown into prison. At around midnight during their praise session, a violent earthquake shook the entire prison and loosened everyone’s chains! (Acts 16:26)
Are you facing your own “midnight hour” situation that seems hopeless?
Sing a psalm of praise.
Do you feel like the enemy is surrounding you on every side? Like Johoshaphat, open up your mouth in praise to our great God!

Psalm of Thanksgiving: Psalm 7:17
I will give thanks to the Lord because of his righteousness; I will sing the praises of the name of the Lord Most High.
Psalm 7:17
In this psalm, king David is calling out to God for deliverance from his enemies. There are times when we feel like the enemy is waiting to defeat and destroy us. But during those times, we can boldly give thanks to God and praise his name!
Prayer: Lord, I praise you today, and I give thanks because of your righteousness. Help me to sing praises to your name each day, for you are the God Most High! Help me to remember in times of difficulty that you are with me. I know that by your grace, you will help me and rescue me. I praise you this day, and forever. Amen.
Psalm of Thanksgiving: Psalm 9:1
I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds. I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing the praises of your name, O Most High.
Psalm 9:1
Once again, in this psalm, David is crying out to God to rescue him from his enemies. In the midst of our prayers, we can ask God for his help with our daily struggles, and praise him for his goodness at the same time. Even as we wait on God to rescue and deliver us, we can thank him for what he has already done in our lives, and for what he will do in the future!
Prayer: Lord I give thanks to you with all of my heart today. Help me to tell of your wonderful deeds to those around me! You have been good, and you have done so much for me. Help me to remember that you have blessed me so many ways, and I will continue to praise your name each day! Amen.
Psalm of Thanksgiving: Psalm 35:18
I will give you thanks in the great assembly; among the throngs I will praise you.
Psalm 35:18
There is definitely a common theme among these psalms of David! In the midst of his enemies trying to destroy him (and David had a lot of enemies in his day), he always remembered to thank God in the midst of what he is going through.
Do you remember when king David was running for his life from king Saul? He fled from place to place, hid in caves, and lived in the wilderness to escape from Saul (1 Samuel 21).
No matter what opposition or adversity we may face, let’s follow the example of David and praise God through it all!
Prayer: Lord, I give thanks to you today in the great assembly. In the company of my family, friends, and church community, I praise your name. When I praise and give thanks to you, I am declaring to those around me that you are good, and that you are in control of my life. Thank you Lord, that I can trust you today! Amen.

Psalm of Thanksgiving: Psalm 69:29-30
But as for me, afflicted and in pain—may your salvation, God, protect me. I will praise God’s name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving.
Psalm 69:29-30
Even in the midst of our pain and affliction, we can still praise God! David not only praised God by writing the psalms and composing music, but by singing psalms of thanksgiving.
Take out your favorite worship playlist, turn up the music, and sing praises of thanksgiving to God!
Prayer: Lord, even in the midst of my pain and affliction, help me to remember the joy of my salvation through you. Help me to open my mouth and sing praises to your name in worship–you are good! Amen.
Psalm of Thanksgiving: Psalm 95:1-2
Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song.
Psalm 95:1-2
Aren’t you glad that God is our solid rock of salvation? Like the powerful hymn declares,
“On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand.”
Prayer: Lord, thank you that you are the Rock of my salvation! When the foundations of this world seem uncertain and shaky, I know that I am firm and secure on your solid rock of love, peace, and grace. Thank you that I can use psalms of thanksgiving to remind me that you are my firm foundation. Amen.
Psalm of Thanksgiving: Psalm 100
Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his, we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.
