There are so many Scriptures on the power of prayer–and many of these Bible verses talk about how we can pray without ceasing. But what exactly does it mean to pray with ceasing?
How can we actually pray without stopping, and how much time in prayer should we spend each day? These are real questions that we can find the answers to in God’s Word.
Let’s take a look at what it means to pray without ceasing, and how we can call upon the name of the Lord each day for His power, hope and strength in our lives.
What does it mean to Pray without Ceasing?
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
This Bible verse in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 is the popular verse many Christians refer to when discussing how we can pray without ceasing. The Greek word ceasing in this verse literally means to pray uninterruptedly and incessantly, without omission or intermission (source).
How can we pray and talk to God incessantly, without stopping or without omission? God knows that we have daily tasks and duties that need tending to in our lives.
As much as we may want to, we cannot stay in our prayer closets all day–but we’ve got house work to do, jobs to go to, and people to take care of.
Praying without ceasing may seem like an impossible task–but think about it; when was the last time we told ourselves to BREATHE? Our bodies live, breathe and have their beings on auto-pilot while we go about our daily tasks.
Prayer can also be just as seamless as breathing. It’s not something we have to force ourselves to do–it just comes naturally.
Praying without Ceasing in Our Minds
Or what about our thought life? According to the National Science Foundation, the average person thinks 12,000 to 60,000 thoughts in one day. Of those thoughts, 85% of them are negative, and 95% of those thoughts are the same repetitive thoughts from the previous day (source).
We don’t wake up and tell ourselves to think. We just do it–and according to this study, most of what people think about is negative! What would happen if the majority of those 12,000-60,000 thoughts each day were thoughts and prayers to God?
How would that radically transform our hearts and minds?! There is a reason Paul in Romans 12:2 says,
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
We need to allow God to transform our minds through His Word. When we fill our minds with the truth of His Word and allow his thoughts to become our thoughts, we will be in such union and connection with the Holy Spirit that we will truly pray without ceasing!
It reminds me of the words of David in Psalm 139,
How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand—when I awake, I am still with you.
Psalm 139:17-18
When we lie down and arise with each new day, God is with us. Instead of filling our minds with anxious thoughts and worries about situations in our lives that we can’t control, let’s flood our minds with the beautiful thoughts of God!
When we delight in his presence and acknowledge that he is with us when we sit and rise, when we come and go, and when we perform our tasks for the day, we are praying without ceasing.
Practicing the Presence of God
Prayer is the most intimate and wonderful way we can communicate with God. We can do this silently in our minds while driving in our cars, doing the dishes, preparing meals, exercising, walking, or sitting at our kitchen tables.
Brother Lawrence, who served as a lay brother in a Carmelite monastery in Paris, said in his book The Practice of the Presence of God,
“We should establish ourselves in a sense of God’s presence, by continually conversing with Him.”
Living with a sense of the sweet presence of God and communing and conversing with him throughout the day is the essence of what it means to pray without ceasing.

Your website has inspired me & reminded me i needed a new bible so i got one. If possible can you help me with some clarification on the prayers without ceasing? I may just be complicating it bc i do that with things that are not complicated. Thank you again for your encouragement and prayers.

Great job
Thank you! Blessings to you and your family!
Hi,
I think that praying without ceasing simply means to replace your inner dialogue, which is on auto-pilot for most people, with a deliberate one-way conversation with God, using your memory to remember scripture to answer your questions or guide your behavior, to ask for things you need, to remain vigilant. It’s not a formal prayer, just non-stop talking to God… you can give God good morning and talk to him all the way to good night.
Great thoughts! Thanks so much for sharing!
