As a young girl growing up in our home, I remember a particular painting hanging in the wall of our basement. It was a painting of Jesus after the resurrection–a beautiful scene of him walking with two men on a road surrounded by lush, green trees.
I always thought that Jesus looked so kind in this picture. In my young mind, it appeared that Jesus was talking to these men as if they were dear friends of his. Later as I grew older, I realized that the picture was an artist’s depiction of Jesus on the road to Emmaus after his resurrection.
I used to imagine myself walking with Jesus on a clear sunny day, listening to him share with me all the questions I ever had about life, heaven and the Bible. Lately I have been reminded of the story of these two men walking with Jesus, and how they were completely unaware of the fact that they were in the very presence of their risen Lord. As we prepare our Easter meals, chocolate eggs, and new spring outfits, let us not forget that Jesus walks with us on our own Emmaus roads.
Here are three powerful truths to remember about Jesus’ Resurrection.
Three Truths about Christ’s Resurrection
1. Jesus Walks with Us in our doubt and distress
As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him. Luke 24:15-16
The two men walking on the road to the town of Emmaus were completely discouraged by the events that had taken place just days earlier. The man known as Jesus of Nazareth, who performed many miracles and claimed to be the Son of God, was brutally beaten and nailed to a cross.
All of Jesus’ followers were stricken with grief and despair, wondering what the fate of Israel would now be. But just as they were processing the fact that Jesus was dead, some of the women in the city claimed that Jesus was alive! How could this be? While the men on the road were discussing these ideas, Jesus came up and walked with them–and they didn’t even know it!
Have you ever gone through a difficult time in your life when you were filled with hopelessness and despair? Have you ever doubted God’s goodness or wondered why he allowed certain events to take place in your life?
Sometimes in the midst of our pain, we can fail to realize that Jesus is walking right beside us. He hears our pain. He knows our frustrations and fears. He sees our doubts. But he doesn’t leave us to ourselves or abandon us to struggle alone.
He walks with us every step of the way.
2. Jesus gives us understanding through his Word
And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. Luke 24:27
As Jesus walked with these men, he asked them what they were discussing. They were bewildered to think that this stranger had not heard of what had happened to Jesus.
With great patience, Jesus explained to them the reason why the Messiah had to die. Starting from Moses all the way to the present time they were living in, Jesus taught them about himself.
Isn’t it comforting to know that as Jesus walks with us, he teaches us? When we are filled with fear and doubt, the truth of His word will calm our fears and fill our hearts with wisdom.
Because of Jesus’ resurrection, all of the prophesies of the Messiah from the Old Testament were fulfilled in Him. Without the resurrection, we would not be able to fully understand the profound truth of the Gospel.
Praise God that Jesus, the Light of the world, illuminates his Word of truth in our lives!
3. Jesus Reveals Himself to us through the Holy Spirit
When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.
Luke 24:30-31
The two men on the road were so intrigued at the teaching of this mysterious man that when they reached their destination at Emmaus, they invited Jesus to stay with them in their home. It wasn’t until Jesus took the bread and broke it that they finally realized it was Jesus.
Their eyes were opened, as if a light switch had suddenly been turned on, and they could clearly see. Have you ever had a “light bulb” moment when a powerful truth about God finally made perfect sense?
God’s word is truly a light for our feet and a lamp for our path, and when we find ourselves stumbling in the darkness. When we are unsure of where to go, Jesus, who has been walking with us all along, will reveal himself to us in ways we could never imagine.
So as you continue to travel on your own Emmaus road, trust that Jesus is walking right beside you. There may be times when we do not feel his presence, but he has never left our side. In our times of struggle, turmoil, and tribulation, he walks with us, teaches us, and guides us with the powerful light of His truth.
