How to Use the Prayer of Jabez Bible Verse to Deepen your Prayer Life

The prayer of Jabez Bible verse is a powerful prayer that can uplift our souls and encourage us in our prayer lives. Let’s take a closer look at this prayer and see what we can learn from this wonderful Scripture.

What is the Prayer of Jabez?

The Prayer of Jabez is a Bible verse from 1 Chronicles 4:10. There is not much mentioned about who Jabez was, but 1 Chronicles 4:9 states that Jabez “was more honorable than his brothers.” We also know that he was given the name Jabez because his mother “gave birth to him in pain” (1 Chronicles 4:9). These are the only facts we know about Jabez–but he is most known for the prayer that he prayed in verse ten:

“Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted his request. (NIV)

1 Chronicles 4:10

After he prayed this prayer, the next part of this Scripture says that the Lord granted his request. Jabez’s prayer was not lengthy or wordy. He didn’t ask selfishly for God to bless him with riches or fame. He simply and boldly asked that God’s hand would be with him.

What greater blessing is there than being in the very presence of our holy God?!

Here are the four bold requests Jabez asked God for in his prayer:

1. Prayer of Jabez Bible Verse: Bless me

Some people may think that it is selfish to ask God to bless us, but all throughout Scripture God blesses his people.

In Genesis 1:28 God blessed Adam and Eve and instructed them to rule over the earth. He blessed Abraham in Genesis 12:2 and said that he would make him and his descendants into a great nation.

In Genesis 32:26 Jacob wrestled with God, and would not let him go until he blessed him.

There is nothing wrong with asking God to bless us and our families. The type of blessing that we desperately need from God is the power of his presence and his abundant spiritual blessings in our lives. Lord, thank you for blessing us!

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

Ephesians 1:3

2. Prayer of Jabez Bible Verse: Enlarge my Territory

What did Jabez mean when he asked God to enlarge his territory? The word territory, or border in this passage refers to specific landmarks or land borders. Perhaps Jabez was asking God to expand the territory of the land of his family, or more specifically, the nation of Israel.

God promised his people that they would inherit the territory of the land he promised to Abraham.

“I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you. The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God.”

Genesis 17:7-8

We may not have physical land that we can claim, but we can boldly ask God to expand and increase our “spiritual landscapes”. God has the power to turn our parched souls into lush places of freedom and refreshment.

See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.

Isaiah 43:19

3. Prayer of Jabez Bible Verse: Let your Hand be with me

We all desire for God to be with us, and we can confidently trust that he is! His Word is filled with promises of his presence going his people. Praise God that he will never leave or forsake us!

…behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.

Matthew 28:20

4. Prayer of Jabez Bible Verse: Keep me from Harm

I love Psalm 121 that powerfully proclaims that our God will keep watch over us and keep us from harm. This does not mean that we will never experience pain and suffering in our lives–but we can boldly trust and believe that God will sustain us each day!

The Lord will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.

Psalm 121:7-8

So what about you? What blessing do you need from God today? Don’t be afraid to boldly approach your Father with your requests and heart-felt desires. He knows what you need, and he loves to bless his people!

Thank you so much for the time you put in to reach and inspire others with the Word of God. I believe and have faith in God. He has brought me through some trials and has answered many of my prayers. But for some reason I don’t like to pray out loud in a group, more behind the seen prayer warrior. I have heard the teaching of Jabez for the last three weeks and now from your email as well. This is God’s confirmation to me that speaking to Him is just as natural as if it is just Him and I. The Holy Spirit will intercede on my behalf. Thank You Christin ❤️

    1. Amen, Dorothea! May the Lord equip you as you pray with power each day! Thank you so much for your message and for your encouragement!
